How Taking Time Off Helped Me Finish My Book

Taking time off can be beneficial for a writing career, according to one author. After receiving rejections on a book, the author took time off, realizing that stepping away provides control in a realm where much is out of one’s hands. Purposeful excursions away from the keyboard can be valuable. Visiting museums, such as the African American Museum and Planet Word, provided inspiration that was later incorporated into the story. Visiting the US Botanic Garden helped the author relate to the astronaut’s time in the International Space Station.

• Taking hours or a couple of days off is a persuasive argument because when I stepped away, I realized how critical that tiny act of push-back is for my writing career.
• When at the African American Museum, for example, I tapped into fortitude and endurance.
• It was more the osmosis of the head writing and getting out of my familiar that prompted deeper insight and exploration.
