What It Means that Hachette Just Canceled an AI Novel

Hachette has canceled the book *Shy Girl* after accusations that the author, Mia Ballard, used LLMs to write it. A Hachette spokeswoman stated that the company requires all submissions to be original to the authors, who must disclose any AI use during the writing process. The book was originally self-published and picked up by Hachette UK before Hachette US planned to publish an American edition. The UK edition has been discontinued as well. Ballard claims an editor used AI and that she is pursuing legal action. Hachette conducted a review of the text, and the cancellation occurred after *The New York Times* inquired about it.

  • Hachette remains committed to protecting original creative expression and storytelling,” a Hachette spokeswoman said.
  • Hachette requires all submissions to be original to the authors, and asks authors to disclose to the company whether they are using A.I. during the writing process.
  • Ballard reiterated the claim that “an acquaintance she hired to edit the self-published version of the novel had used A.I.” and that her “name is ruined for something I didn’t even personally do.”
📚 BookAddict’s Take: If you are a traditionally published author, make sure you understand your publisher’s AI policy, and if you’re an AI-assisted author, be prepared for increased scrutiny.
