Am I being scammed?
A self-publishing author sought beta readers in a Facebook group and may have encountered a scam. An individual offered to beta read, provided feedback on the first two chapters, and then proposed a revision plan for a fee. The author was concerned about the high price quote of over $1700, which was then drastically reduced when the author stated their budget was $50. The person became pushy about payment via PayPal and requested an alternate email address because the author’s current email was supposedly linked to Upwork. The author is unsure if it’s a scam due to the quality of the initial feedback, but is concerned about the price drop and pressure to pay.
- Someone commented and offered to be one for me.
- Then they said they charge 2 cents per word…My word count is over 89k times .2 is over 1700 dollars
- They kept emailing me, asking me about my email and if I was okay with PayPal.
📚 BookAddict’s Take: If you’re an author seeking beta readers, this is a cautionary tale about vetting potential collaborators and clarifying payment expectations upfront.
