Jack Kirby Way: How It Got Renamed and Why it Matters

A street corner in New York City, at the intersection of Delancey Street and Essex Street, is now permanently known as Jack Kirby Way. The renaming happened after a sustained effort by Kirby fans. Roy Schwartz, along with Karen Green, and Christopher Marte were instrumental in making this happen. The renaming effort took about a year, building on previous efforts. Schwartz said he came across one of Kirby’s 1970s Captain America comics and it immediately grabbed his attention. Marte said it’s important to honor Jack Kirby’s contributions so that they are not forgotten. Convincing the city government to bestow the honor wasn’t simple.

  • Thanks to a sustained effort by Kirby fans who were committed to honoring his legacy, the street corner is now permanently known as Jack Kirby Way.
  • My office is full of comic book and sci-fi fans, myself included, so it was a no-brainer for me to get on board.
  • Believe it or not, it’s not easy to change a street name in New York City
📚 BookAddict’s Take: If you are a comics fan, this is a great story about how persistent fans can make a lasting impact on the world.
