My First Thriller: Kaira Rouda

Kaira Rouda realized she didn’t belong at a romance writers conference and wanted to turn to something darker. She tried to cancel her pitch session, but met with an editor who was interested in her psychological suspense novel. Harper Collins made an offer to include Rouda’s novel as one of three books to launch a new commercial imprint, Graydon House. At Book Expo America, Rouda was shocked to see a giant banner displaying the cover of her book. Rouda has written dozens of books including non-fiction, women’s fiction, romance and psychological suburban suspense. Her first crime novel starts with a couple getting away for the weekend from their home and two young sons.

  • Harper Collins wanted Rouda’s novel as one of three books to ride the marketing wave for the imprint’s launch.
  • “I’ve always been fascinated by what’s underneath perfect lives,” she says.
  • “That was my magical publishing moment,” she says.
