After Jordan Vance loses her job, a stranger attempts to kill her, but she is saved by a professional killer named Dennis. Dennis reveals that he was hired to protect her from an Iranian general who wants to use her to keep her father from revealing his crimes. Jordan thought both her parents were killed in a car accident years ago. Her father was a consultant to foreign governments, and the accident was an attempt to silence him. Dennis, a freelance operative for the British government, is on a mission to keep Jordan safe. Jordan refuses to be a passive victim and forms a partnership with her protector. The romantic dynamic is refreshing because she chooses not to hide behind Dennis.

• Dennis initially inhabits the cliche of the stoic hit man: “This man had just killed another man in front of me, with the casual precision of someone dusting crumbs off their shirt.”
• It’s satisfying to watch an underestimated protagonist get the better of heartless, misogynistic predators.
