Utah Bans 28th Book for All Public School Students

Utah has banned an additional book, bringing the total to 28 books banned statewide from all public schools. This occurred after the Maya Angelou estate joined a lawsuit against Utah’s book banning law. The lawsuit challenges the legality of Utah’s “sensitive materials” law, which had previously banned 22 books. The state added titles such as Bag of Bones, Breathless, The Carnival at Bray, The Handmaid’s Tale: The Graphic Novel, and Red Hood to the list. Looking for Alaska has become the 28th state-sanctioned book ban in Utah. Nine books have been banned in Utah since January 1, 2026. Utah passed House Bill 29, allowing parents to challenge books they deem “sensitive material”.

  • Utah has banned four more books from all public schools, bringing its complete list of books banned statewide at that time to 27.
  • The suit challenges the legality of Utah’s “sensitive materials” law, which had at that point banned 22 books from every public school in the state.
  • Looking for Alaska by John Green has become the 28th state-sanctioned book ban in the state of Utah.
